FOCUS 's INAUGURATION OF ITS OUTDOOR MARITIME TRAINING FACILITIES AT SITUGINTUNG LAKE
FOCUS News - Friday, July 14,2001

FOCUS Maritime Training Center now has its own Outdoor Maritime Training Facilities for use during Maritime Practical Training to complement the theoretical training done in classrooms. FOCUS' Outdoor Maritime Training Facilities are located lakefront at the Situgintung Lake, with facilities as follows:

Gravity Davits
Foam Fire Ground, Water Fire Ground, CO2 Fire Ground

Swimming Pool
Dark and Smoke Chamber

Also in attendance during the ceremony were Mr. Albert Lapian from the Directorate General of Sea Communication, Mr. Dodo Rukanda, and Mr. Agus Winarno as the External Auditor from the Department of Sea Communication's Agency for Education and Training, DR. MA Aziz, another IMO Consultant who is also one of the founding members of Met Consult, Ltd.

These facilities were officially inaugurated on Saturday, July 14, 2001, attended by Prof. DR. Malek Pourzanjani - Consultant to IMO - and Capt. Sahid - as Head of Directorate for Marine Safety at the Directorate General of Sea Communication, under the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Indonesia

On this occasion, the President Director of FOCUS - Mr. Robert T. Hadipuspito stated that "... As some of us might have read yesterday, Kompas Newspaper had written an article on the state of our seafarers'readiness in anticipating full implementation of STCW 1995 requirements, and according to the article, there are now some 70,000 Indonesian seafarers in need of validation and revalidation training for their maritime skills and competencies if they wish to remain being employed aboard foreign flagged ships. Hence, I do hope that by the completion of these facilities, FOCUS as a Maritime Training Institution can do its own small share of contribution toward assisting Indonesian seafarers in realigning their skills and competencies to be based on STCW 1995, come February 1, 2002. I also wish our other friends and colleagues from other Maritime Training Centres, Institutions and Manning Agencies would work hand-in-hand with FOCUS in utilizing our facilities to further prepare our seafarers to be fully qualified, skill-wise, in relations to the STCW 1995 Convention Requirements..."

Immediately following the ceremony, a series of Survival Demonstrations using The Gravity Davits and Fire Fighting Demonstrations were conducted at the outdoor training ground.
