| APPMI (Asosiasi Pendidikan dan Pelatihan Maritim Indonesia / Indonesian Maritime Education & Training Association) was established on April 3, 2000 by the Indonesian Maritime professionals and practitioners, for the purpose of Not to be another competing organization with other already-established Indonesian Maritime-Related Organizations, but rather to further solidify and increase mutual joint cooperations and support for the running of each others' programs as contributions towards improvement on the quality of Indonesian Seafarers' skills and expertise in the International world. | ![]() |

In that spirit, APPMI held its General Assembly on October 21, 2000 with the theme - To build a total system of Indonesian Maritime Education and Training Programs based on IMO's Rulings and STCW 1995. The event took place at the Hercules Room, The Executive Club of PT Persada Purnawira Halim, at Jl. Raya Protokol, Halim Perdanakusumah, Jakarta. |
Issues that were presented during the First Assembly were, among others, threats facing Indonesia as a nation should it not be able to place itself on the IMO's "White List" of nations due to lack of cohesive and integrated Maritime Education and Training Systems in this country, and also the fact that there are still many private maritime institutions whose curricula are not yet standardized with those used at the government-owned maritime institutions which in the long run can greatly affect the quality of graduates between the state and privately-run institutions throughout the country.
Other issues that were also brought up during the assembly were opportunities for Asian seafarers, particularly Indonesia, for employment in Europe, and the need to create new Maritime Laws and a database system for Indonesian seafarers.
At the same, the Assembly
also officially inaugurated its first Board of Trustees and laid out APPMI's
Agenda for the coming years.
